Sexy or Sexualized #1

Consider this the pilot to a potential series at XP Chronicles.

In the debate about sexualization, there usually is a sense that there are just two camps: the camp that says the picture is sexy and the one that says it’s sexualized. Neither camp leaves much room for nuance and complexity in the art. So the series name is really a misnomer: I’m not asking you to choose which one is the “good” picture and which one is the “bad”. I’m asking you to describe what you see in it. Has the subject been reduced or enhanced? Are they themselves the messenger of their message? Is the artist projecting? Did the artist achieve sexy or is it just porn?

It’s about dialogue. Let the talking being.

  1. I haven’t looked at all of them, but the draenei paladin is pure sexualization. You can’t tell she’s a paladin. She is lying splayed out like a porn actress. Same with Tony Stark. Nice butt. 😉 Some of the art is clearly erotic without being oversexualized. For me it’s a very thin line.

I am sure the Sonic one will haunt me in my dreams. Not the good kind of dreams.

    • I had to toss sexy Sonic in there. I don’t know about Tony Stark. To me it felt sexual and non-pornographic. I liked the play on how his uniform assembles itself. Seemed appropriate. But that’s why I wanted to get everyone else’s thoughts. Hopefully see the issue as less binary and talk about what we think is going on in the pictures (and what is actually going on).

My life has printed out the Batman.

  2. That Sonic… /shudder
I’ve been thinking how I would qualify most of those pictures and I think context matters. It’s possible for someone to be completely nude and not sexy in the slightest. If there is a bit of exposure in an image but it’s not the focus, I suppose that’s sexy. That’s where I’d personally put the Tony Stark for example, because the image is about him putting on his armour and becoming Iron Man. (But doesn’t he usually wear clothes underneath? To someone who knows better it might seem off.)
With some of the skimpily dressed heroines in your gallery I’m not entirely sure. Their poses are mostly ready for action, implying a greater purpose, but the excessive cleavage distracts from that as it seems impractical to me. Borderline between sexy and sexualised.
I agree with Kadomi that the Draenei paladin is pure sexualisation. She’s not at all dressed for purpose and lying down in one of those anatomically impossible poses that makes it possible to ogle both her boobs and her butt at the same time.
